Learn about the origins of women’s frame drumming, how to hold the drum and play the basic strokes associated with the elements, and how to coordinate walking, singing, and playing the drum in a group of women.

bodysoulwork studio, Room 126 in the South Whidbey Community Center, 723 Camano Avenue, Langley, WA 98260

Important:

Drums to use in the workshop will be provided for the first 10 people to sign up. If you already own a frame drum (NOT a shaman’s drum), please DO bring it with you for the workshop.

Other items to bring:

  • Something to sit on, either a cushion or backjack for the floor or a folding chair with non-marking feet.

  • A blanket or yoga mat to lay on.

  • An item for the altar, perhaps representing an aspect of your self that is drawn to the frame drum, or just something that “feels right.”

  • Water bottle with lid.

  • Journal and pen.

  • Glasses, if you need them.

The Festival of the Elements is an interactive community art experience for all ages co-created by local artist, Melissa Koch and Waldorf educator and puppeteer, Holly Koteen-Soule. The month-long celebration of Earth, Water, Fire and Air will take place at the South Whidbey Community Center (723 Camano Avenue) in the Frank Rose Gallery. This event will feature many wonderful local artists, musicians, poets and puppeteers. 

Come be a part of the magic at the Opening Ceremony in the Frank Rose Gallery, on Saturday, November 8th from 3 - 4pm. Community members are invited to dress in colors or costumes or bring an accessory inspired by the elements. 

A Puppet Show of an original fairy tale will premiere on Sunday, November 9 (11 am - noon) in the Frank Rose Gallery at the South Whidbey Community Center. The puppet performance will take place on the following two weekends (See calendar below) All performances will include a variety of music and creative activities with audience participation. 

There will also be a free Puppet-making Workshop for children ages 7-12 on Saturday, November 1, from 10 am to noon. Children who participate will make small puppets to accompany the large Spirits of the Elements puppets in the Opening Ceremony. All materials will be provided. As spaces are limited, reservations for the workshop are required. Contact Holly Koteen-Soule at hollyksgarden@gmail.com to reserve a space.
